What is Luma Uni-1?

Luma Uni-1 is the image model Luma AI announced in March 2026, alongside its Luma Agents product, and the company's first "unified understanding and generation" model. Luma describes it as a multimodal reasoning model that can generate pixels. Where Dream Machine and Ray 2 made Luma known for video, Uni-1 is the company's bid for stills: one model that understands a request, plans the picture and produces it, then edits it when you ask for changes.

The architecture is the interesting part. Uni-1 drops the diffusion pipeline used by most image generators in favor of a decoder-only autoregressive transformer. Text tokens and image tokens sit in one interleaved sequence, so inference and pixel generation happen in a single forward pass, much like a language model writing a reply. That design is why Uni-1 can follow layered directions about camera angle, lighting and color, accept up to 9 reference images upstream to lock identity and composition, and apply plain-English edits such as swapping a background or shifting the light. Luma reports 2048 pixel output upstream and, on its own human preference evaluation at launch, first place in overall, style and editing, and reference-based generation, with second place in text-to-image.

On Aura AI, Uni-1 appears in three forms. Luma Uni-1 generates from text for 2 credits per image in five aspect ratios. In the image editor, Luma Uni-1 Edit costs 2 credits and Luma Uni-1 Edit Max costs 3 credits per edit. All three are available on every plan. Rivals in the same unified category include Nano Banana, GPT Image 2 and FLUX 2, and you can switch between them without leaving the tool.

Luma Uni-1 Capabilities

Six things a reasoning-first image model does differently

One Model, One Pass

Understanding and generation share a single autoregressive transformer. The model reads your intent, plans the layout and writes the pixels in the same sequence, with no separate diffusion stage.

Natural-Language Editing

Upload an image and describe the change: "make it golden hour", "remove the sign", "put her in a red coat". Uni-1 edits the region you mean and leaves the rest intact. Two tiers on Aura AI, Edit and Edit Max.

Reference-Guided Generation

Upstream Uni-1 accepts up to 9 reference images to preserve identity, pose and composition. Luma reports first place in reference-based generation on its human preference evaluation.

Precise Direction

Camera angles, lighting setups, color grades and even rough doodles or collages can steer the output. The model treats these as instructions to reason about rather than loose style hints.

Broad Style Coverage

Launch coverage cites 76 visual styles, from realistic photography to comics and ukiyo-e. Uni-1 ranked first for style and editing in Luma's Elo comparison, so style changes on existing images are a strength.

Layout Planning

For complex prompts the model plans the arrangement of elements and can add annotations, which makes it usable for storyboards, marketing layouts and diagrams, not only single-subject shots.

How to Use Luma Uni-1 on Aura AI

Four steps from prompt to an edited, downloadable image

  1. Open the Text to Image tool to generate from scratch, or the Image Editor to change an existing picture. Sign in with your Aura AI account.
  2. Pick Luma Uni-1 in the model selector (or Luma Uni-1 Edit / Edit Max in the editor) and choose one of the five aspect ratios. The credit cost shows before you generate.
  3. Write the prompt as a direction, not a keyword list. Say what the subject is, where the camera sits, how the scene is lit and what mood you want. For edits, describe only the change you need.
  4. Generate, review and download without watermark. Chain edits by sending the result back into the editor, or animate the final image in Image to Video.

What to Make with Luma Uni-1

Where reasoning and editing in one model pay off

Product Relighting and Backgrounds

Take one packshot and produce a whole catalog: new backdrop, new light, same product. Use Edit Max when the label and materials must stay exact.

Example Prompt: "Keep the bottle exactly as is. Replace the background with a marble bathroom shelf, soft morning window light from the left, subtle reflection, 1:1"

Storyboard Frames

Describe shot, lens and blocking and Uni-1 plans the composition. Generate the sequence at 2 credits per frame, then animate the keeper in Image to Video.

Example Prompt: "Storyboard frame 3: low angle, 24mm, a courier on a bike crossing a rainy intersection at night, headlights streaking, cold blue grade, 16:9"

Portrait Retouch and Wardrobe

Change an outfit, fix the lighting or move a subject to a new setting with a sentence. The model keeps identity and pose while applying the change.

Example Prompt: "Same person, same pose. Change the grey hoodie to a navy wool coat, add warm late-afternoon light, blur the street behind her slightly"

Marketing Layouts

Hero images with planned negative space for copy, or annotated explainers where the model places labels where they belong.

Example Prompt: "Website hero: matte green ceramic mug on a light oak desk, left third of the frame empty for headline text, soft daylight, muted palette, 16:9"

Luma Uni-1 FAQ

Common questions about Luma Uni-1 on Aura AI

What is Luma Uni-1? +
Luma Uni-1 is Luma AI's first unified understanding and generation model, announced in March 2026. Instead of a diffusion pipeline it uses a decoder-only autoregressive transformer that places text tokens and image tokens in one interleaved sequence, so the same forward pass reasons about the request and produces the pixels. It handles text-to-image, natural-language editing and reference-guided generation with up to 9 reference images upstream. On Aura AI it costs 2 credits to generate an image and 2 or 3 credits to edit one.
How many credits does Luma Uni-1 cost on Aura AI? +
Luma Uni-1 costs 2 credits per generated image in the text-to-image tool. In the image editor, Luma Uni-1 Edit costs 2 credits per edit and Luma Uni-1 Edit Max costs 3 credits per edit. All five aspect ratios (16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3, 3:4) cost the same, and only successful generations are charged.
Which plan do I need to use Luma Uni-1? +
Luma Uni-1, Luma Uni-1 Edit and Luma Uni-1 Edit Max are available on every Aura AI plan: Starter ($14/mo), Pro ($59/mo) and Premium ($99/mo). Each plan includes a monthly credit allowance shared across all image and video models, on web, iOS, Android and Windows.
What is the difference between Luma Uni-1 Edit and Edit Max? +
Both run the same Uni-1 model in edit mode, where you upload an image and describe the change in plain language. Luma Uni-1 Edit costs 2 credits and is the everyday option for background swaps, lighting changes and local fixes. Luma Uni-1 Edit Max costs 3 credits and is the higher-effort tier for edits where fidelity to the original matters most, such as product shots and portraits.
How does Luma Uni-1 compare to Nano Banana and GPT Image 2? +
All three are unified models that generate and edit. On Aura AI, Luma Uni-1 is the cheapest at 2 credits to generate and 2 to edit, Nano Banana Pro costs 3 to generate and 2 to edit, and GPT Image 2 costs 4 for either. Luma reports that Uni-1 ranked first in human preference Elo for overall quality, style and editing, and reference-based generation, and second for text-to-image, on its own evaluation at launch. Pick Uni-1 for edit-heavy workflows and reference-driven scenes, GPT Image 2 when you need the strongest text and layout accuracy.
