What is FLUX Kontext?

FLUX Kontext, officially FLUX.1 Kontext, is the editing branch of the FLUX family from Black Forest Labs. It launched on May 29, 2025 in two hosted versions, Kontext [pro] and Kontext [max], with an open-weight [dev] variant in private beta at the time. The idea behind it is "in-context" generation: the model reads an image and a text instruction together, so instead of describing a whole new picture you describe only the change. Change the outfit, move the subject to another city, swap the time of day or rewrite the words on a sign, and everything you did not mention stays as it was.

That is what separates it from the original FLUX 1 Dev, which only goes from text to image. Kontext preserves the identity of a character across several rounds of edits, keeps the style of a reference consistent, and handles local edits without repainting the full frame. Black Forest Labs reported inference up to 8 times faster than FLUX 1.1 Pro at launch, together with top scores on its own KontextBench for text editing and character preservation. Pro is tuned for iterative multi-step refinement; Max pushes prompt adherence and typography further at a higher price.

On Aura AI, FLUX Kontext is an editing model only. You find FLUX Kontext Pro (2 credits) and FLUX Kontext Max (3 credits) in the AI image editor next to FLUX 2 Edit, Nano Banana Edit and GPT Image 2 Edit. Upload any image, or send a result from the text to image tool, and get the edited version back without watermark.

FLUX Kontext Capabilities

Six things Kontext does that a text to image model cannot

In-Context Editing

Kontext takes your picture and your instruction as one input. The prompt describes the change, not the whole scene, so a two-line request is usually enough to get a precise result.

Character Consistency

The same face, body and outfit survive across edits. Put a character in a new location, a new pose or a new lighting setup and they still read as the same person.

Local Edits

Change one object, one colour or one region and leave everything else untouched. Kontext does not re-render the unrelated parts of the frame, which is what keeps product shots and portraits usable.

Text Editing

Rewrite the words on a sign, a label or a poster straight from the prompt. Kontext Max is the variant to use here, since Black Forest Labs positions it as the stronger model for typography.

Style Reference

Extract the look of an input image, a painting style, a colour treatment or a rendering style, and apply it to a new scene while keeping the original composition readable.

Fast Iteration

With inference up to 8 times faster than FLUX 1.1 Pro upstream, Kontext is built for several rounds of small changes in a row. Each round on Aura AI costs the same flat 2 or 3 credits.

How to Use FLUX Kontext on Aura AI

Four steps from an existing picture to a finished edit

  1. Open the Image Editor and sign in with your Aura AI account. Upload the picture you want to change, or pick a result you generated earlier in Text to Image.
  2. Pick FLUX Kontext Pro (2 credits) for everyday changes, or FLUX Kontext Max (3 credits) when the edit involves text, typography or a complex instruction. The cost is shown next to each model.
  3. Describe only the change. "Replace the grey sofa with a green velvet one", "make it night, keep the same street", or "change the sign to read 'OPEN LATE'". Do not re-describe the parts you want to keep.
  4. Generate, check the result, and run another round if needed. Download without watermark, or send the edited image to Image to Video to animate it.

What to Make with FLUX Kontext

Where prompt-based editing with a consistent subject pays off

Product Variations

Photograph one product once, then generate every colourway and every background from that single shot. The shape, label and proportions stay identical across the set.

Example Prompt: "Change the sneaker colour to forest green with white laces, keep the same angle, lighting and background"

Character in New Scenes

Take a character from a story, a mascot or a portrait and place it in a different setting. Kontext keeps the face and outfit while rebuilding the environment around it.

Example Prompt: "Same woman, now standing on a rainy Tokyo street at night with neon reflections, holding a clear umbrella"

Text and Signage Fixes

Replace the words on a storefront, a poster or a packaging mockup without touching the surrounding design. Use Kontext Max for the cleanest lettering.

Example Prompt: "Change the neon sign text to 'OPEN LATE' in the same font and colour, everything else unchanged"

Restyling and Relighting

Turn a photo into a watercolour, switch daytime to golden hour, or match the look of a reference frame. The composition survives, only the treatment changes.

Example Prompt: "Make it late evening with warm window light and long shadows, keep the same room and furniture"

FLUX Kontext FAQ

Common questions about FLUX Kontext on Aura AI

What is FLUX Kontext? +
FLUX Kontext (officially FLUX.1 Kontext) is a family of in-context image editing models from Black Forest Labs, launched on May 29, 2025. Unlike a classic text to image model it takes both an image and a text instruction as input, so you can change clothes, restyle a scene, replace a background or rewrite text while the rest of the picture and the identity of the subject stay intact. On Aura AI it is available as FLUX Kontext Pro and FLUX Kontext Max inside the image editor.
How many credits does FLUX Kontext cost on Aura AI? +
FLUX Kontext Pro costs 2 credits per edit and FLUX Kontext Max costs 3 credits per edit. Both prices are flat: they do not depend on the size or aspect ratio of the image you upload, and only successful generations are charged.
Which plan do I need to use FLUX Kontext? +
FLUX Kontext Pro and FLUX Kontext Max are available on the Starter ($14/mo), Pro ($59/mo) and Premium ($99/mo) plans. Every plan includes a monthly credit allowance that also covers the other image and video models on Aura AI, on web, iOS, Android and Windows.
What is the difference between FLUX Kontext Pro and FLUX Kontext Max? +
Kontext Pro is the model built for iterative editing: it handles local edits, scene changes and several rounds of refinement while keeping characters and style consistent, at 2 credits per edit. Kontext Max is the maximum performance tier with stronger prompt adherence and better typography handling, at 3 credits per edit. Start with Pro for everyday changes and switch to Max when an edit involves text or a complex instruction.
Can FLUX Kontext generate images from text only? +
Upstream, FLUX.1 Kontext can generate from text or from a reference image. On Aura AI it is exposed as an editing model only, so you always start from an uploaded picture or from a result made with another model. For text to image, use FLUX 2, FLUX 1 Dev or any other model in the Text to Image tool, then send the result to the image editor and refine it with Kontext.
